Essay on Personal Statement - 1405 Words

My decision to pursue a PhD is derived from my passion for science and engineering paired with my abilities in the field of machine learning and applied statistics. I consider myself fortunate to be part of the Department of Computer Science, University of Florida for my master studies. More importantly, I am glad to have two excellent professors in this field as advisors, Dr. Pader and Dr. Jilson, who are guiding me throughout my graduate studies. They assisted me to decide and pursue the courses and topics that interested me. My master’s thesis is an extension to this study, for which, I am working with â€Å"Morpheus† team at Database Research Center in our department. Our team is building a question answering system that uses deep web sources by exploiting information from Wikipedia and WordNet along with sample query answering strategies provided by users. The motivation behind this research work is as follows. If we search for an answer to a question in a typical search engines such as Google, Bing, or Yahoo, it usually gives us relevant pages based on the key words in the query. We may need to follow several links or pages to reach a document providing a relevant answer. If we can store such search pathways to an answer for a given user query and reuse it for future searches it may speed up this process. Our question answering system motivated by reuse of prior web search pathways to yield an answer a user query. We represent queries and search pathways in a semi-structured format that contains query terms and referenced classes within a realm based ontology. First part of my research is to build a system that can automatically tag the terms in a user query to relevant classes from a domain-based ontology. The other part is to rank the prior searches (contains user queries, assigned classes, and search pathways) stored in the database based on theShow MoreRelatedPersonal Statement On Pers onal Responsibility850 Words   |  4 PagesPersonal responsibility is holding you accountable for all your actions and decisions. John Keats And Bob Dylan Essays - Value, Social Philosophy

John Keats And Bob Dylan Why Judgments Matter, gives many examples of why value judgments are important in our lives. I feel that value judgments are as equally important and it should be evident why after briefly explaining Frith's examples and my own as well. In his first example, Mr. Frith gives insight to David Hare's comment, "In the end, Keats was just better than Bob Dylan". The media, without delay, misjudged the true meaning of Hare's statement and transposed it into a debate of value. Although Mr. Frith did not agree with the media's tactics, he did agree with the ?value' debate. Mr. Frith Feels that value judgments"organize social relations" in our life, and he further proves this point using an example from popular music. Mr. Frith focuses on views in music studies. Judgments about musicians are generally made in two ways. Firstly, is the elevation of excitement with ?community'(joining of performers and their audience). Secondly, aesthetic and ethical sub-tones during community. This value placed upon the musicians is very important, this is possibly the deciding factor in the performer's career. If more fans come to a concert, then the performer becomes more popular or valuable. The same goes for the messages sent out by the performer during a performance. A message that is widely accepted and adorned will attract more fans. I find that the critical analysis of value judgments in our lives is of equal importance. I agree with Mr. Frith's findings and find them to be true in other life settings as well. As individuals we use value judgments to prioritize important characteristics in our life, which shape us into cultural individuals. We place a high judgment on the social aspect of our culture. Some examples of this include; friendships, personal appearances, and material items. In friendships, we place value judgment on moral attributes set by others. It is these attributes that we judge to be worthy or unworthy of our friendship. Those of similar moral values tend to find each other in companionship. In personal appearances, we place value on what we represent ourselves to be. Higher income families tend to pay more attention to this value for it is a language in which is unspoken. Financial value of one's appearance and the personal value (self esteem) of one's self tend to run parallel. People place different values on the material items they posses. Two families may bring the same income into a household, and posses some of the similar materials. However, it is the value they place on their material items that make them different. It is this difference that brings out the subjective individuality. "Evaluation is a key cultural activity", according to Frith. Without evaluation we would not be able to set some separation between each other as individuals, eventually becoming numb to culture as we know it. I feel it is imperative that we evaluate every aspect of our lives, in turn ensuring the greatest personal happiness. How does one attain a favorite? Not by suggestion of a higher authority, but by evaluation. Putting value on things and making value judgments is what enables us to label what we like and what makes us happy. Without it, we would not be happy.

Embracing Change The Season is Changing - Are You

Embracing Change The Season is Changing - Are You The first hints of Fall are creeping in. The mornings are crisp, and leaves are starting to turn. More than any year that I remember, I’m in a state of change myself as this season of change comes upon us. Most people resist change. We humans are creatures of habit, and even when we know we need to change in order to grow or be successful, we fight to hold on to our old ways of being. I am no different. One of the biggest things I have been changing is how I am as a team member. I have been doing a lot of work on being fun to work with – choosing, even when things are not going the way I want them to go, to be delightful instead of resentful and unpleasant. Making this change has entailed taking in some painful feedback, and getting on a core level that this feedback is for me, delivered with good will, and meant to make my life better. The Implications of Change This growth edge is extremely important for me as a business owner and as a speaker. My newfound attitude has helped me create a better customer experience for an important corporate client, maintaining their confidence even when we had some breakdowns. Any unwillingness to change on my part could have meant the end of that relationship. I am also seeing results in my speaking career. I’ve known for a long time that I have been weak in obtaining clients through speaking; people get a lot of information from me and then take it and go home, most often never contacting me again. I have not liked this. I have wanted it to change! But I kept doing things the same way I had been doing them, which all of us know is NOT a recipe for different results. Biting the Bullet Two months ago, I finally decided to hire a speaking coach, Denise Hedges, in hopes that I could turn things around. With a major presentation coming up September 20, this seemed like the right time to get serious. Now 4 sessions into a private coaching with Denise, I am finding out why I took so long to tackle this issue! This might surprise you, but Denise did not just tweak a few things here and there. She had me write a brand new introduction, delete half my slides, and craft a completely different offer, along with a new, unfamiliar script. And now I am having to practice all these things by myself, trying to remember the new phrases and organization. I’m feeling scared and very uncomfortable. I have been procrastinating. I do not like this! I don’t wanna!! And yet, I have done what she asked me to do, without (too much) complaint. Reaping Rewards When I practiced my new script with a friend, he said it was way better than anything he has heard from me before and that it addressed an issue he had noticed but hadn’t ever quite identified. He heard my offer as my truly wanting to be there with him, understand him, and help him, and he found me very relatable in my delivery. I’m expecting this presentation to be my best ever, and to create excitement in my audience about working with me that I have never created before. And I still want to cry every time I think about delivering my talk in a new way, or about practicing it – again. Here’s the thing. Growth is painful. It’s usually not fun, or at least it’s not fun until you get the results of your new way of being. Then it all becomes worth it. Your Turn The question to ask yourself is not whether you are resisting change, but how and where you are resisting it. I invite you to choose one area, as the leaves turn gold and purple, in which you will take a risk and weather the pain to get a new result in your life. Where are you going, where have you been Bob Dylan Who is the main Essay

Where are you going, where have you been Bob Dylan Who is the main character ,Connie or Arnold Friend - Essay Example The story revolves around Connie who is the main character. She is a beautiful young girl aged fifteen but self-absorbed. She ends up at odds with her mother and leaves the house without her parents’ knowledge. Arnold is a friend to Connie and works at a nearby restaurant. He is a darker version of somehow otherworldly figure type. While Connie’s parents are at a barbecue dinner elsewhere, Arnold heads to her home to take her out for dinner. Connie is powerless and ultimately cannot defy Arnold’s compulsion. The story took place in 1960s and describes a lot about American life back in those days. Even though at one point, Connie discovers that Arnold is much older than he claims to be, she cannot do anything since there was no one at her rescue. In addition, he scares her to give into her demands by threatening to harm her and her family in case she does otherwise (35). This shows absence of law enforcing bodies that could protect all citizens of the United State s of America. In the story, Carol Oates brings about evocation of Bob Dylan with a meaningful purpose. The presence of richness within the setting of the story creates an improvement towards realizing a stabilized life. Furthermore, Oates brings out wealth in view of depicting a period where Americans were going somewhere, ‘where are you going?’ towards social revolution (54). Connie is also the main character because she is representing all the women in America. It was during this period when the American women were at the forefront of asserting about their rights and their impeding need to end their domination from men. Oates uses Connie as the main character to portray the status of women in America during that period and their concerted efforts of claiming their sexuality in a manner that was never visible in the history of America. The story is at the center of Connie and all what revolves around her life. Oates used

Economics Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Economics - Research Paper Example In other words, 1% of people in America controls more than 1/5 th of the total income generate in America. This is a striking fact. The author argues that economic inequality is not all about how much you make — it’s about how much you have (Rampell). For example, it is quite possible that an average American makes substantial money from his profession or business. However it is not necessary that the amount he makes may be sufficient enough for his expenditure if he may have more family members. In other words, an American who has only 3 members in his family and another one who have 5 or 6 members in his family cannot be considered equally with respect to economic equality, even if they earn same income. The followi9ng chart illustrates this argument clearer. (Rampell) From the above chart, it is clear that even though the top 1 percent of earners receive about a fifth of all American income; they hold about a third of American wealth. In other words, the income recei ved and the income controlled by the top 1% is unequal. In fact the top 1% controls more wealth than the actual wealth they received or earned. From the above fact, it is clear that the richest people in America are able to save more than what the average Americans save. The recent recession underlined the above fact. Richest people in America succeeded in escaping from the recent recession without causing many damages to their economic interests whereas the average American suffered a lot because of the recession. In other words, the savings of the average Americans were not adequate enough to meet any unexpected economic catastrophes. Highest earning Americans save more whereas the lowest earning Americans save less. In other words, as time passes, more and more wealth will be controlled by the highest earning people compared to the lowest earning people which is the major reason for economic inequality in America. Along with the increasing economic power, the bargaining power and the influences of the rich people may also increase. In other words, more of the shares of the governmental subsidies, relief packages, rebates etc will come in the hands of the rich people rather than going into the hands of the poor people. For example, President Obama has recently huge stimulus packages to help the people to come out from the economic crisis. However, majority of the shares of these stimulus packages went in the hands of the highest earning people. Wolf (2009) has pointed out that the stimulus plan will strengthen the economy by creating millions of good-paying jobs; deliver tax relief for 95% of workers and invest in America’s future by fixing our communities' roads and bridges, improving our children's education and making America more energy independent (Wolf). However, as per the statistics available, it is quite clear that these stimulus plans failed to generate much impact in the lives of ordinary people. When Obama proposed the 700 billion bailout package to the struggling industries in America, many people have raised their eyebrows. Major share of this huge money was gone into the hands of the private business men. In other words, Obama collected the money from the taxpayer’s pocket and distributed it to the private businessmen. In other words, the rich people became major beneficiaries of these stimulus packages also. Under the above circumstances, Rampell’

Millennium project Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Millennium project - Essay Example The Dome was not only envisaged to be a unique landmark but a huge tourist attraction that would reflect the financial success of the project. The Millennium Dome was a pet project of the labour government of UK. It was initiated by John Major of conservative party and taken over in 1997 when Tony Blair of labour party, came to power. Blair made the Millennium Dome as the most favoured project that would herald the success of labour party and subsequently that of Blair’s vision of putting Britain’s architectural marvel on the world map as the most celebrated building of the millennium. Blair had claimed that Dome would be ‘a triumph of confidence over cynicism, boldness over blandness, excellence over mediocrity’ (BBC, 2001). The circular Dome is constructed over an area of 186 acre on Greenwich Peninsula with twelve 100m high support towers that signify Greenwich Mean Time or twelve months of the year. The diameter of the dome is 365 days corresponding to the days in a year (CMS committee, 1997). It is one of the largest Domes of the world. It is the most famous landmark of London that celebrates millennium. Richard Rogers was the chief architect and Buro Harold, the engineer who realized the dream of constructing the world’s most recognizable architectural delight. Millennium Dome is not exactly a dome but resembles a canopy because of the pillars that support the whole structure. The huge space under the canopy is designed to hold mammoth events and festivals for people. It was opened to public on 1 January 2000 with large number of attractions and exhibits which were sponsored by hoards of corporate giants and continued throughout the year. The year long exhibition was supposed to showcase the talent of Britain in the myriad areas of art and culture. The Millennium Dome Show was held 999 times during the entire year. Despite best efforts by the Millennium commission to rope in corporate bodies to make it a success, the
